You do not need pierced ears to wear real earrings. Earrings for non-pierced ears are a proper category, and clip-ons are the main option. However, most people have tried a pair once, felt them pinch after twenty minutes, and quietly gone back to wearing nothing.
Here is the short answer first. A clip-on holds on with gentle pressure instead of a piercing, and the fitting weighs a little more than a plain stud post. Some people put a pair on and forget about them. Others notice after a while. So two things help: being able to adjust it, and not hanging much weight off it. Mine weigh 1.3 to 2 grams each.
Below is what a clip-on is, how one feels to wear, and which of my designs come with the option. For the material side, I wrote a longer guide to polymer clay earrings that covers durability and care.
- Any of my designs can be a clip-on. Most already show the option, and I can make the rest that way too.
- Mine are screw-backs, so you set the tightness yourself.
- Clay is light for its size. Mine run 1.3–2 g each, so a big shape is still a light one.
- A clip can feel uncomfortable for some people — it sits by pressure and weighs a little more than a stud post.
- Non-pierced ears and sensitive ears are different problems. For the second, look at the post.
What a clip-on earring actually is
A clip-on earring grips the outside of your earlobe with a small hinged or screw fitting instead of passing through a hole. In other words, gentle pressure holds it on rather than a piercing. Nothing goes through the skin.
Clip-ons are the oldest of these. Ear screws, magnetic backs, spring hoops and ear cuffs exist too, but for a dangly earring with some size, a clip still works best.
Why a clip can feel uncomfortable, and what helps
Clip-ons are not for everyone, and it is worth saying so.
A clip holds on by pressing gently on your earlobe, so there is always a little pressure there. Additionally, the fitting weighs slightly more than a plain stud post, which makes the same design a touch heavier as a clip-on. Some people never notice. Others do, after an hour or so.
Two things help. The first is being able to adjust it. A clip set at a fixed tightness either suits your ears or it does not, and everyone’s lobes are a different thickness.
The second is keeping the weight down. The less an earring weighs, the less there is for the clip to hold up. Above all, do both.
Why clay works so well for non-pierced ears
Clay is very light for its size. That is the whole reason I can make a statement-sized clip-on that does not dig in. A shape that would be heavy in metal or stone comes out at a gram or two in cured clay.
Here are my real numbers, per earring:
| Design | Weight per earring | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean Bloom – Cone Shell | approx. 1.3 g | 1 cm wide, 3 cm long |
| Luna Glow – Pink | approx. 1.3 g | approx. 2.5 cm long |
| Daisy Teardrop | approx. 2 g | approx. 4 cm long |
For example, the Daisy Teardrop is four centimetres long and still only two grams. Length is a poor guide to weight.
My clip-ons are screw-backs, so you set them yourself
The fitting I use is a screw-back. Specifically, there is a small screw at the base, and turning it moves the pad in or out. Consequently, you set how tight it sits.
Set it like this. Put the earring on the thicker part of your lobe, not the bottom edge. Then turn the screw a little at a time until the earring stops swaying, and stop there. Tighter is not more secure. It is just tighter.
Which of my designs come as clip-ons
Most of them already show a clip-on option on the product page. However, if the one you want does not, I can still make it as a clip-on. The fitting goes on at the very end, after the clay is cured, so it is not decided by the design — just ask when you order from my earrings collection.
Every product page lists its options near the top. Moreover, the clip-on costs the same as the stud — I do not charge extra for the fitting somebody happens to need.
Non-pierced ears and sensitive ears are not the same problem
These two get mixed up.
If you have no piercings, a clip-on is the answer. Nothing goes through your skin, so the post material is irrelevant.
If you do have piercings but react to metal, the answer is the post itself. For that reason I offer a plastic hypoallergenic stud on selected designs, including the Ocean Bloom shells, which carry all three fastenings. In particular, I use the word hypoallergenic for that plastic stud only, never for stainless steel. Accordingly, if that is your problem rather than piercings, my guide to earrings for sensitive ears explains what each post is made of.
How to wear clip-on earrings all day
- Put them on last, after hair and perfume. Additionally, this keeps product off the clay.
- Aim for the thicker part of the lobe, so the pressure spreads over more skin.
- Adjust, do not force. Turn the screw a little at a time until the swaying stops.
- Take them off if they start to ache. Similarly to any pressure fitting, a short break resets it.
Earrings for non-pierced ears: common questions
Can you wear earrings without pierced ears?
Yes. Clip-ons grip the outside of the earlobe instead of going through a piercing, so nothing pierces the skin. Additionally, magnetic backs, ear cuffs and spring hoops exist. However, for a dangly earring, a clip-on is usually the most secure.
Do clip-on earrings hurt?
Some people find them uncomfortable and some never notice. A clip sits by pressure, and the fitting weighs slightly more than a plain stud post. However, an adjustable screw-back and a light earring both help. Mine weigh 1.3 to 2 grams each, so there is little for the clip to hold up.
Do clip-on earrings fall off?
Not if the tension is set properly. Specifically, turn the screw until the earring stops swaying on your lobe, and it will stay put. Overall, a lighter earring is also less likely to work loose.
Can you get clay earrings as clip-ons?
Yes, and clay suits it particularly well. Because a cured clay shape weighs a gram or two, there is very little for the clip to hold up. Most of my designs show the option on the product page, and I can make any of them as a clip-on.
Are clip-on earrings good for sensitive ears?
For unpierced ears, yes, because nothing goes through the skin. However, if you have piercings and react to metal, look at the post rather than the clip. Accordingly, I offer a plastic hypoallergenic stud on selected designs. I use that word for the plastic option only.
Any of my designs can be made as a clip-on, at the same price as the stud. Have a look and see which shape you like. 🌼
